Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave) records with Black Sabbath!

Over the weekend (on January 13), Black Sabbath announced that the title of their next album is 13, that it will come out in June (no exact date was provided) and, most notably, that the drummer on the album is Brad Wilk, formerly of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave.

Black Sabbath, featuring founding members Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Ozzy Osbourne (vocals) had planned a reunion with their original lineup, including drummer Bill Ward.  Ward backed out of the reunion, saying that he wasn’t presented with a “signable contract.”  Shortly after that, Sabbath announced that they “engaged a substitute drummer.”  They performed in England at the O2 Arena in May, at England’s Download Festival in June and at the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago in August, all with Tommy Clufetos, from Osbourne’s solo band, on drums.

Sabbath’s press release made no mention of Clufetos, however, saying only that the band “recorded the album primarily in Los Angeles and were joined at the sessions by drummer Brad Wilk.”  Wilk has a long history with the band’s producer, Rick Rubin: Rubin produced Rage Against The Machine’s final album, 2000′s Renegades, as well as Audioslave’s 2002 self-titled debut and the 2005 follow-up, Out Of Exile.

Black Sabbath have a brief string of dates planned in April and early May in Australia, New Zealand and Japan.  The press release makes no mention of who will play drums on those dates.  However, Wilk is booked this Friday, January 18, at the Sundance Film Festival as part of Dave Grohl’s “Sound City Players.”

  1. Yeah, apparently he’s the drummer on the pending new album. No news on whether he’ll be the touring drummer or not.
